Chance EncounterChance encounter with a man named York.
I was waiting for a client for a portrait session in Chicago, my hands itching to press the shutter on my camera. As I waited, I noticed a man nearby taking pictures. I offered to help capture a photo of him. When I asked his name, I didn’t catch it at first. He laughed and said, “York, like in New York.” Not being well-versed in iPhones, I had him set up the phone the way he wanted before taking the picture. We snapped a few shots, and I asked him to send one over so it could be part of this page of mine. He’s a visitor from another state, enjoying his time in Chicago—and now, with a photo to remember it by.
Chance encounter with Patrick and Lauren at Cascade Falls
I spotted the perfect place where they had been sitting and thought to myself, “I need someone to pose there.” As I was leaving the cave, Patrick asked if anyone was around, and I told him no. Then, I decided to see if he’d be willing to pose for me in that spot. Lauren joined him shortly after, and I was thrilled to have another couple to photograph. The pressure kicked in when Patrick mentioned that his mom was also a photographer—making me realize I needed to nail this shot. In the end, I think I did pretty well. I used an on-camera flash for this shot, but angled it so it wasn’t hitting them directly.
Chance encounter with a couple at a state park
Met this nice couple who willing pose for me at the Cascade Falls in Matthiessen State Park, it's quite tricky to get where they were so it was nice for them to do this.
Chance encounter with a lovely couple at an iconic building in Chicago
I've always wanted to capture a photo of this iconic Chicago building. After wrapping up an engagement proposal shoot, I was heading back to my car when, to my delight, I found myself passing by the Chicago Theater. I knew I had to find someone to pose for me in front of that famous marquee. That’s when I noticed Varun and Anvitha, who seemed to be waiting for an Uber at the corner of E Randolph St. and N State St—perfectly positioned with the theater’s iconic signage as their backdrop. They happily agreed to be my subjects, and the moment came together just as I’d hoped.
